Recording - Conversations to Create Unity: Yvonne Cortez-Flores's Interview

Yvonne Cortez-Flores remembers her childhood (in the 1970s and 80s) growing up Latina with a single mom and eight siblings in Montopolis, a southeast Austin, Texas neighborhood. She discusses what it was like living in poverty; getting shot as a child; her current union activism with American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME); and race relations and gentrification in Austin, Texas. This interview is part of an oral history project, Conversations to Create Unity, conducted by the Susanna Dickinson Museum and funded by Baylor University's Institute of Oral History. The project features fifteen oral histories from a diverse group of lifelong Austinites. Their inte
